Copyright Infringement Policy

We respect the intellectual property of authors, publishers, educators and institutions, and we expect everyone on Unilearno to do the same. This policy explains how to report content that you believe infringes your copyright, what happens next, and how to respond if your content is removed.

Applies to: Rights holders and everyone who shares content on Unilearno

In short

  • Only share content you own or have permission to use.
  • Rights holders can report infringing content to our copyright agent at [email protected].
  • A valid notice must identify the work, the infringing material and your contact details, with a good-faith statement.
  • We act quickly on valid notices, notify the person who posted the content, and allow counter-notices.
  • Accounts that repeatedly infringe copyright will be closed.

Our approach to copyright

Unilearno hosts content created by learners, Academic Experts and our own team, including messages, shared files, learning resources and profiles. Users are responsible for the content they share. Our Terms of Use and Acceptable Use Policy prohibit uploading content that infringes anyone’s intellectual property.

We respond to notices of alleged infringement in line with applicable law, including India’s Copyright Act 1957 and Copyright Rules 2013, the Information Technology Act 2000 and its rules, the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and similar laws in other countries where our users are based.

What you can and cannot share

Usually fine

  • Your own notes, drafts, code and original work
  • Materials an Academic Expert created for your session, used for your own learning
  • Short extracts of published works used for study, criticism or review, with proper attribution, where the law allows (for example, fair dealing or fair use)
  • Openly licensed materials used under their licence terms (for example, Creative Commons), with attribution
  • Your own course materials, shared privately with your expert for your session, where your institution allows

Not allowed

  • Uploading full or substantial parts of textbooks, journal articles or e-books without permission
  • Sharing your institution’s lecture slides, recordings, exam papers or assessment materials publicly or where the institution forbids it
  • Reselling or publishing session materials or Unilearno learning resources
  • Copying another expert’s or learner’s work and presenting it as your own
  • Sharing pirated software, media or other content

Reporting infringement

If you believe that content on Unilearno infringes your copyright, send a written notice to our designated copyright agent:

Email[email protected] (subject: “Copyright notice”)
PostOur registered office address, shown on the Contact page

Your notice must include:

  1. your name, address, telephone number and email address;
  2. a description of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed, and proof of your ownership or authority to act for the owner (for example, a registration, a link to the published work or a licence);
  3. the exact location of the material on Unilearno that you say is infringing, such as the URL, profile, resource or message, with enough detail for us to find it;
  4. a statement that you believe in good faith that the use of the material is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
  5. a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury where applicable, that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on the owner’s behalf;
  6. your physical or electronic signature.

Please make sure the material really infringes your rights before you send a notice, and consider whether an exception, such as fair dealing or fair use, applies. Knowingly making a false claim may make you liable for damages and costs.

What happens after a notice

  1. We review your notice to check it includes the required information. If anything is missing, we will ask you for it.
  2. We act on valid notices. We remove or disable access to the material, usually within 36 hours of receiving a complete notice.
  3. We tell the person who posted it, with a copy or summary of your notice, and explain how they can respond with a counter-notice.
  4. We keep a record of notices and actions, including for our repeat-infringer policy.

Under India’s Copyright Rules 2013, where material is removed following a notice, it may stay unavailable for 21 days. If, within that period, we do not receive a court order relating to the material, we may restore it.

Counter-notices

If your content was removed and you believe this was a mistake, or that you had the right to use it, you can send a counter-notice to our copyright agent. It must include:

  1. your name, address, telephone number and email address;
  2. identification of the material that was removed and where it appeared before removal;
  3. a statement, under penalty of perjury where applicable, that you believe in good faith that the material was removed by mistake or misidentification;
  4. a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the appropriate court (for users in the US, the federal district court for your address, or if outside the US, any judicial district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice;
  5. your physical or electronic signature.

We will forward a valid counter-notice to the person who sent the original notice. Unless they tell us they have started court proceedings, we may restore the material within 10 to 14 business days after receiving the counter-notice, or as otherwise required by law.

Repeat infringers

We will close the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright in appropriate circumstances. We may also close an account after a single serious infringement, such as commercial-scale copying or redistribution of paid materials.

Our own content

The Unilearno website, brand, learning resources and guides are protected by copyright and other rights. You may use them for your own learning, but you may not copy, republish or sell them without our written permission. To ask for permission, contact [email protected].
