Unit rationale, description and aim:
The aim of this module is to provide a comprehensive review of the cardiovascular system. Each week, you will focus on a core pathology related to the cardiovascular system and within this context, you will review normal cardiac structure and function related to the topic, as well as risk factors, aetiologies and pathogenesis that lead to dysfunction of the system. This allows for a more comprehensive connection between physiological and pathophysiological principles that underpin cardiovascular disease states. Disease treatment and/or management, as well as complications of disease will also be covered. The inclusion of preparing for professional practice material will also provide exposure to the importance of patient history taking and physical examination.
The teaching-learning methods will incorporate knowledge, skills and critical thinking, thus giving a holistic approach to learning the cardiovascular system. The teaching methods include recorded lectures with interactive workshops, live small group sessions including PBL sessions where students and teachers are engaged in a community in which learning is the result of interactions, reflection and experiences. The overarching goal is for the students to understand basic science principles and techniques along with the pathophysiology of normal and abnormal processes, and the tools needed to diagnose and manage patients with cardiovascular disorders. Students will gain competencies in 1) patient care, 2) medical knowledge, 3) interpersonal and communication skills, 4) professionalism, 5) problem-based learning, 6) systems-based learning and 7) self –directed learning.
